Trump administration deploys machine learning for Medicare
The administration of Donald Trump launched a pilot program named WISeR to approve or deny medical coverage requests for Medicare patients. The initiative utilizes machine learning and started in January across six states: New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Washington, with plans to run until the end of 2031.
The deployment resulted in technical disruptions, lengthy processing delays, and ambiguous denials of medical services. The Government Accountability Office stated that officials failed to follow necessary legal procedures, prompting congressional representatives to initiate efforts to suspend the program.
